Cognitive Behavior Therapy Center
Homeless veterans have significant physical and mental health needs impacting their ability to work and live healthy lives. In 2014, 56% of homeless veterans had a disability. This is twice the rate of the general Veteran population and 1.3 times the rate of non-veteran homeless adults.

Family Enrichment Center
For some Veterans, returning from military service means coping with symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Post-traumatic stress disorder, sometimes known as shell shock or combat stress, occurs after you experience severe trauma or a life-threatening event.

More than half of homeless veterans have a serious mental illness (55%) or substance use disorder (59%). More than one-third are dually diagnosed, meaning they have both a substance use disorder and another mental illness.

It is hard to imagine a veteran homeless in America, yet it happens—and increasingly so in recent years. The obstacles that Veterans often faced when they return to civilian life can put them at risk for homelessness. This would include struggles in finding affordable housing and earning gainful employment and income. Also, statistics show that nearly 80% of homeless veterans suffer from drug and alcohol abuse

Being homeless is a traumatic experience for anyone. Homelessness can impact an individual’s physical and mental health state, social support systems, employment/income, and the ability to be financially stable. Multiply that with the fact that Homeless Veterans have served our country so that we can live freely in our homes, and they live on the streets.

Virginia Suicide Prevention Coalition
We believe that providing emergency housing first is necessary for a safe and secure environment for our homeless Veterans. We will foster an environment of self-respect and self-reliance for our homeless Veterans population to help reduce suicide rates amongst the Veterans.
